Building a Team
Choose party members whose abilities boost your fighters, then add equipment and supporters. Check the Tag, Episode and Element requirements to see which boosts apply.

If the icons on a character’s screen are new to you, read the Beginner’s Guide to the Screens first.
The party
A party holds up to 6 characters, and you can keep 7 parties to swap between. Up to 3 characters fight in each battle. The others still contribute the boosts below. Preset Party saves a party so you can load it later, and Auto Select fills a party with characters or equipment of any Tag or Element you choose.
The Leader
Parties in regular modes and Super Space-Time Rush have a Leader slot. When the Leader fights:
- the Leader gets every party member’s Z Ability effects, and
- every party member gets the Leader’s Z Ability effects.
With a Buddy alongside you in a regular mode, only the first applies. Hyperdimensional Co-Op, Co-Op Raid, Tournament of Power and Guild Battle teams have no Leader.
Abilities that boost the party
| Ability | Who has it | Who it boosts |
|---|---|---|
| Z Ability | Every character | The party members it names, from the start of battle. Stronger at ★3, ★6 and ★7+. The character doesn’t have to fight. |
| Zenkai Ability | Zenkai Awakened characters | Every party member it applies to. Unlocks at Awakening Rank I and grows at III, V and VII. |
| ULTRA Ability | ULTRA characters | Fires at the start of battle when they’re in the party. Effects that count support members count up to 3, and supporters don’t count. |
| Assault Z Ability | LEGEND and LEGENDS LIMITED characters | Up to 3 battle members including the character, only while they’re one of the fighters. Stronger at ★3, ★6 and ★7+. Regular stats only, not Tournament of Power stats. |
Because Z and Zenkai Abilities target Tags, Episodes and Elements, a team built around one Tag or Episode gets more out of them. Z Abilities matter most when you build a party, more than rarity or Element. The Ability Bonus on the party screen goes up as your members’ Z Abilities boost each other, so it’s a quick check that a party fits together. Browse the characters to find ones with the Tag or Episode you’re building around.
Each character’s Unique Abilities have their own activation conditions.
The Recommended Allies button on a character shows who players with a high Season Rank in Rating Matches pair them with. For a character few people use, it shows allies whose abilities suit them instead.
Tag Characters
A Tag Character is two characters fighting as one unit, swapping with the Switch button. They share Tags, stats, health and effects. In place of a Main Ability they have a Switch Gauge, which fills when they use Arts and when they’re hit, and their Switch Ability fires each time they swap.
For abilities that look for a character or Tag in battle, only the character currently on screen counts. Z Abilities, Zenkai Abilities and equipment conditions count both characters. Either way, the unit counts as one character, and when it’s defeated both count as defeated.
Making a character stronger
Stars and Z Power
You get a character once you’ve collected 100 of their Z Power, from summons and Scout Battles. More Z Power Limit Breaks them, adding a star each time, from ★1 up to ★7+. ★7 takes 3,000 Z Power. Each Limit Break raises their stats, and their Z Abilities get stronger at ★3, ★6 and ★7+.
Multi-Z Power (Menu > Item > Multi-Z Power) adds Z Power to any character that meets its conditions. Some are restricted to LEGENDS LIMITED, LEGEND, ULTRA, event (card numbers with “EVT”) or Episode characters. None work on Shallot or characters whose card number starts with DBL00. Any Z Power past the maximum is lost.
Once a character is at ★7+, any more of their Z Power turns into Z Medals (Z2 Medals for some summons). Awakening Z Power for a character already at Awakening Rank VII turns into Z Medals too, so you only start earning them once characters are maxed out.
Zenkai Awakening
Some characters can be Zenkai Awakened once they’re at ★7 or higher. Collect 1,000 of their Awakening Z Power and they reach Awakening Rank I, and every 1,000 more raises the rank, up to VII at 7,000. Awakening Z Power comes from the character’s own ZENKAI AWAKENING summon, and older Zenkai characters also have Missions that give it.
| Rank | Awakening Z Power | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | Strike and Blast Arts levels, Zenkai Ability I | |
| 2,000 | Special Skill, Special Move, Ultimate and Awakened Arts levels | |
| 3,000 | Strike and Blast Arts levels, a Unique Ability, Zenkai Ability II, the character’s Arts Card Sleeves | |
| 4,000 | Special Skill, Special Move, Ultimate and Awakened Arts levels | |
| 5,000 | Strike and Blast Arts levels, Zenkai Ability III | |
| 6,000 | Strike, Blast, Special Move, Ultimate and Awakened Arts levels, a Unique Ability | |
| 7,000 | Special Skill, Strike and Blast Arts levels, Zenkai Ability IV |
Arts levels only go up for the Arts the character has. Their stats rise too, and their card picture changes.
Level and Training
Characters level up from experience in battles and from Training, which uses Training Items. Some Event and PvP battles give no experience. Training Items come from Adventures, battles and Missions. Gold and Silver Bells are rarer, mostly from Raid Battle exchanges and the Platinum Coin and Rare Medal exchanges. Each level raises every stat, and each Arts levels up at certain character levels and Zenkai ranks.
The quickest experience is the daily Let’s Fight! event (Menu > Event > Upgrade), which opens once you clear Main Story 1-2-6. Play each of its battles once a day.
Friendship
Fighting in the Main Story and some Event Stories gives a character Friendship Points, even if you lose (but not with Skip Tickets). Every 10 Friendship Levels raises their Friendship Rank and resets the level to 0, and each level reached pays out Chrono Crystals. In the Tournament of Power, each rank adds 0.5% to all of the character’s stats, up to 5%. Some ranks also let the character teach Shallot a Special Move.
The three Let’s Fight! battles each day give a lot of Friendship Points. For other quick points, Main Story Part 6, Book 1, Chapter 8 is a good stage, and the equipment “There’s no way that WE…could lose to someone like you!” from the Z Medal Exchange raises the points you earn.
Arts Boost
Each character has three Arts Boosts. Each has a grade that raises their stats and the Heavy Attack chance of the Arts it covers:
| Boost | Covers |
|---|---|
| Strike Arts | |
| Blast Arts | |
| Special Move, Awakened and Ultimate Arts |
Boost from Menu > Upgrade > Arts Boost. It costs Arts Cores and Zeni, plus Arts Seeds that match the character’s Element. Each core has a grade range, a success rate and a set number of grades it adds. It can’t raise a boost past its limit grade. Cores and Zeni are spent whether the attempt works or not, while Arts Seeds are only used on a success. You can make several attempts in a row. The game returns unused items if the boost reaches its maximum or the core’s limit before all attempts finish. Some stories ask for a minimum grade (see Battle Mechanics).
Heavy Attacks don’t happen in PvP, the Tournament of Power or Guild Battle, but the stat boost from Arts Boost still counts there.
| Item | Where to get it |
|---|---|
| Arts Cores | Dual Coin / Great Dual Coin, Weekend Medal, Rush Medal / ZENKAI Rush Medal and Seed Exchange Medal Exchange Shops |
| Arts Seeds | Seed Exchange Medals at the Exchange Shop |
| Seed Exchange Medals | Daily Missions, and the Rare Medal, Dual Coin / Great Dual Coin and Legends Ranking Medal Exchange Shops |
The Dual Coin, Weekend and Rare Medal Exchange Shops reset their limits once a month, announced in the News.
Equipment
You get equipment by clearing battles that give it as a reward and by trading exchange items for it. Ongoing Events are the main source.
Each party character can wear up to 3 different pieces of equipment. The slots open as the character levels up. Set it from Home > Characters > Party Formation: tap the character, then a slot, then the piece. Each piece has conditions the character must meet (hold its icon to see them): Element or Tags first, then Limit Break level. A character can’t wear two pieces with the same name, except a few that say so. Its abilities only help the character wearing it. An ability that checks battle or party members’ Tags or Episodes without saying when fires at the start of battle. Effects that cancel Attribute Upgrades can’t cancel equipment effects.
Two copies of the same equipment can roll different abilities. Recommended Equipment, the Recommended button beside a character’s equipment on the Party Formation screen, shows what players with a high Season Rank in Rating Matches use most on that character. Browse all of it in equipment.
Slots, rank and rarity
Each ability sits in a slot, and the slot’s colour shows how strong its effect rolled: red is strongest, then yellow, then green. When a slot opens, its ability’s strength is picked from a set range.
Each piece gets a rank from the total strength of its slots. The rank changes as slots open, so you won’t know its final rank until you’ve fully upgraded it:
From highest to lowest, the ranks are Godly (神), Z+, Z, S, A, B, C, D, E and F. Rarity is fixed per piece, and the frame around the equipment’s icon shows it:
| Frame | Rarity |
|---|---|
| Iron | |
| Bronze | |
| Silver | |
| Gold | |
| Unique | |
| Platinum | |
| Event |
Platinum equipment can’t be upgraded, because its slot values are fixed.
Upgrading
Upgrade a piece up to twice with Souls and Zeni (Home > Characters > Equip, Upgrade tab, then tap a locked slot). Each upgrade opens a slot with a new ability and leaves the old ones alone. “Upgrade All Unupgraded Slots” does every locked slot at once. Boost Souls come from story stages, Adventures and more, and Legends Weekend (Saturday 06:00 to Tuesday 06:00 UTC, every week) drops extra.
Reupgrading swaps the ability in Slot 2 or Slot 3 for a new one, using Slot Removers (from the Rare Medal Exchange Shop), Souls and Zeni. You can’t get the old ability back. You can reupgrade up to 30 times in a row. The process stops at your chosen colour (orange or better, or red), after your chosen number of attempts, or when you press Stop. “Batch Process” skips the animations and disables Stop. If the process finishes early, you get the unused materials back. The cost depends on the piece, goes up with every reupgrade and resets once a day.
Slot 1 can’t be reupgraded. A Guaranteed Upgrade always raises a slot’s effect value without changing the ability, up to its maximum. It costs either Chrono Crystals, Souls and Zeni, or Slot Removers, Souls, Rare Medals, Equipment Medals and Zeni. Slot 1 also needs Guaranteed Upgrade Tickets [Slot 1] from the Shop. How many tickets depends on the rarity and on whether the piece is Awakened. The cost changes with use and resets once a day. Abilities with a negative effect, or whose effect changes when boosted, can’t be guaranteed upgraded.
Making Z and Z+ equipment
Getting S, Z or Z+ equipment takes repeated attempts at collecting and upgrading copies. Because Slot 1 can’t be reupgraded, keep exchanging for a piece until you get one with a red or yellow Slot 1, then reupgrade Slots 2 and 3 for strong effects. Guaranteed Upgrades raise the slot value, but cost a lot of resources.
If you’re new, aim for A and S rank equipment that suits each character first, and leave Z and Z+ for later.
Awakening
Equipment Awakening turns a Memory into Awakened Equipment
, with extra trim around its frame and stronger abilities. It can have stricter equip conditions, and some modes don’t allow it. It can’t be worn with the normal piece of the same name. It opens once you clear Main Story Part 1 Book 2 Chapter 5 on NORMAL, under Home > Characters > Equipment, Awaken tab.
You need a Memory, which sets the other materials, plus Fragments (in colours, normal and Rare) and Zeni. Both come mainly from Rush Medal exchanges, earned in ZENKAI Ultra Space-Time Rush and some other Events. Fragments also come from stories and Adventures. Slot 1 of the new piece gets a random ability, and you can make up to 30 in a row with the same stop options as reupgrading. Pieces are another Awakened Equipment material. Save them for later if you’re new.
Selling and storage
Sell equipment you don’t need from the Sell tab (Home > Characters > Equip). Each piece sells for a different price. The “Expand Equipment Limit” item, from the Exchange Shop or Shop sets, raises how much you can hold.
Supporters
Supporters are characters who step in during battle to back up your battle members. They aren’t the same as support members, the party members who don’t fight. Supporters work everywhere except Ultra Space-Time Rush, Full Power Battle, Tournament of Power and Guild Battle. Browse the supporters to see their abilities.
Your first copy of a supporter always comes from a summon, and some come from Events. After that, Multi-Supporter Tickets from the Chrono Crystal Shop trade at the Exchange Shop for a copy of any supporter you already own. An Event supporter levels up with Supporter Summon Tickets from the same shop.
Each party has room for 6 supporters, and they change with the party. Before a battle you pick one as the deployed supporter. In PvP, as with battle members, your opponent’s choice stays hidden until just before the fight. Supporter Presets save a formation, and the same presets work in regular modes and Hyperdimensional Co-Op.
| Ability | When it works |
|---|---|
| Support Z Ability | From the start of battle for every supporter in the party, deployed or not. Raises all your battle members’ stats, whatever their Tags or Episodes. The Total view adds them all up. |
| Support Ability | Only for the deployed supporter, firing on its own when its conditions are met. Damage it deals uses the stats of your character on the field, ignores Elements and can’t defeat the enemy. |
A supporter levels up when you get more copies of it, not from battles, up to level 99. Each level takes 1 copy, except 29 → 30 (3 copies), 59 → 60 (5) and 98 → 99 (7). Each level strengthens its Support Z Ability. Its Support Ability and artwork also change at these levels:
| Supporter level | Support Ability level | Picture |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 29 | 1 | First |
| 30 to 59 | 2 | Second |
| 60 to 98 | 3 | Third |
| 99 | 4 | Fourth |
A copy of a supporter already at level 99 turns into medals.
